Not For God And Country
NFGAC is an award winning true and definitive war story, written from the context of my experiences as a Marine Grunt in the thick of the Vietnam War. Learn why young Americans were sent to fight and die in that distant land because of decisions made before most of them were born. Experience the daily physical and emotional battles faced as an unlikely mix of young American fighters are turned into brothers and heroes in the unforgiving reality of nontraditional insurgent warfare.
The only friends we had were the young men, most just out of high school, next to us in the monsoon-soaked jungle, thousands of miles from home and America - a land so far away and unobtainable it was referred to as The World. The war had become the focal point of our young lives, changing us forever.
Back on American soil, survivors found no welcoming or appreciative country or the peace we sought. The bullets might have quit flying, but new struggles, PTSD, lingering wounds, social abandonment, and the effects of Agent Orange took the place of combat struggles in-country.
The book can be purchased through Amazon as a paperback, hard cover, or ebook, or ordered as a Print on Demand book from bookstores.

True American

This book gives a clear and concise explanation of the issues during the Vietnam conflict. Written in a way so all can understand. As a veteran of that era (not deployed in country) and the son of a 30 year Marine veteran of WWII, More and Vietnam, I can appreciate all said in this book. Thank You for saying what is needed for those combat veterans who did their duty to each other Mr. Murphy.
An amazing book

A book both personal and historically enlightening - a must read for anyone who wants a greater understanding of the war in historical context and what it was actually like for the "grunts" who fought in the jungle. Well written and moving.
A powerful first hand account

This book tells a raw, powerful, compulsively readable story of what it was like to be a young man serving in America’s most tragic war. Murphy pulls no punches in describing the hell of combat in vivid terms. Ultimately, this is a tale of what carried the survivors through — not lofty ideals in a nation torn apart by the war, but their brothers in the field. This book is worth a dozen dry history volumes on the Vietnam War. It’s both dramatic and instructive.
A masterful work

There are not a sufficient number of superlatives in my vocabulary to fittingly praise Murphy's book. Roger Jones, US Army, 1970-72 (fortunate stateside veteran)
Continues an Honorable Tradition

William Murphy continues an honorable tradition of humble but honest, powerful writing about the experience of soldiering in the American armed forces. His memoir of service as a Marine rifleman made me think of other great veterans' accounts by Eugene B. Sledge, Joseph Plumb Martin, William Manchester, Paul Fussell, Tim O'Brien, and Eliot Ackerman. I'd recommend this book to anyone hoping to understand the immense challenges facing American ground troops in the war in Vietnam.
